Resurrection Walk – and others! (by Michael Connelly)

I have had a reading blitz on Connelly’s stories featuring 3 main characters. It is interesting to contrast how Connelly uses these characters.

Introduction: Michael Connelly, a titan in the realm of crime fiction, continues to captivate readers with his intricate plots, compelling characters, and unflinching portrayal of contemporary issues. His works, “The Dark Hours,” “Resurrection Walk,” and “The Brass Verdict,” showcase his versatility and mastery in both police procedurals and legal thrillers.

Resurrection Walk

resurrection walk“Resurrection Walk” follows Mickey Haller, the Lincoln Lawyer, as he takes on the case of a woman wrongfully convicted of murder. As Haller digs deeper, he uncovers a web of corruption and deceit that threatens his life. This novel emphasizes Haller’s legal prowess and his relentless pursuit of justice, even in the face of systemic corruption.

The book has been praised for its intricate legal drama and the charismatic character of Mickey Haller. Connelly’s ability to weave a compelling courtroom narrative while exploring themes of legal justice and redemption is on full display. Fans of the Lincoln Lawyer series will find “Resurrection Walk” a worthy addition, continuing the tradition of high-stakes legal battles and investigative work.

The Dark Hours

(Publication Date: November 9, 2021)

In “The Dark Hours,” Connelly brings together two of his most beloved characters, Renée Ballard and Harry Bosch, in a gripping narrative set against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic and social unrest. The novel opens with a New Year’s Eve murder that quickly ties into an old unsolved case of Bosch’s. Concurrently, Ballard is on the trail of the Midnight Men, a pair of serial rapists terrorizing Los Angeles.

The novel has been lauded for its fast-paced plot and complex characters. Publishers Weekly called it “a masterpiece,” while Booklist praised it for its unflinching look at policing in the post-George Floyd era. The dynamic between Ballard and Bosch, described as a professional friendship born out of mutual respect and dedication, adds depth to the story. However, some readers noted that Bosch’s presence is more limited compared to previous books in the series[.

The Brass Verdict

(Publication Date: October 14, 2008)

In “The Brass Verdict,” Mickey Haller inherits a high-profile case from a murdered lawyer. As he prepares for the trial, he discovers connections to his own past and a deeper conspiracy. Harry Bosch plays a significant role in the investigation, adding a layer of complexity to the legal thriller.

This novel is acclaimed for its gripping plot and the dynamic between Haller and Bosch. The combination of legal and crime thriller elements makes it a standout in Connelly’s oeuvre. The moral ambiguity and ethical dilemmas faced by the characters add depth to the narrative, making it a thought-provoking read.

The introduction of Bosch, Haller, and Ballard has brought some interesting changes to Michael Connelly’s writing:

Fresh Perspectives: Bosch, the grizzled veteran cop, offers a familiar lens into the LAPD. But Ballard, a night shift detective fighting against a broken system, and Haller, the defense attorney navigating legal loopholes, provide entirely new viewpoints on the criminal justice system. This broadens the scope of Connelly’s stories.

Evolving Universe: Connelly’s world-building strengthens. Bosch, Haller, and Ballard can all exist in the same Los Angeles, occasionally crossing paths and influencing each other’s narratives. This interconnectedness creates a more immersive reading experience.

Character Dynamics: The interplay between these characters is a new element. Bosch and Ballard, for instance, complement each other: Bosch with his experience and Ballard with her tenacious spirit. Their interactions add another layer to the novels.

Shifting Focus: While Bosch remains a central figure, Connelly can now dedicate novels to Ballard or Haller. This allows for deeper exploration of these characters and the challenges they face.

Overall, Bosch, Haller, and Ballard enrich Connelly’s writing by offering fresh perspectives, expanding his fictional world, and creating new character dynamics.
