Things We Never Said

One of the advantages of Prime Membership is a range of free Kindle books to “borrow” monthly. One such is “Things We Never Said” written by Nick Alexander. I previously read “The French House” and “The Half-Life of Hannah” which were great reads. I failed to enjoy “The Other Son” though.

So was looking forward to reading “Things We Never Said” and I was not disappointed. It is sad, funny and uplifting. Sean’s wife Catherine has died after a long fight against cancer. The book reveals their life together via a series of photographs and cassettes created by Catherine in her last few weeks alive.

There are many emotional ups and downs during the book as the revelations are so conflicting for Sean as he digests each weekly instalment. It is a roller-coaster emotional journey. Sean finds it difficult to move on, and start a new life. But by the end of the book, there is a new life with his daughter’s baby and a potential new relationship.

The use of the text from cassettes and photographs is a clever concept and the reader looks forward to each episode. Compelling and thoroughly enjoyable.
